Lessons on Electoral Matters

Democracy was in action this November as eighth-grade students in Dawn Callahan’s class at Rocky Point Middle School took an in-depth look at the presidential candidates running for election as well as the overall campaign process.

After selecting which individual they personally supported, the students conducted a thorough research project on that person’s individual platform and stance on a certain issue. They documented their research using the NoodleTools online resource and then practiced their public speaking skills by defending their choice in a mock debate. During the debate, each side worked to convince their peers that their candidate was best suited for the presidency based on their view of matters such as foreign trade, terrorism, education, immigration and women’s rights.

As a conclusion to the project, the students formalized their opinions in a persuasive essay and participated in a mock vote to select the winning candidate.
